President Barack Obama promised in his presidential acceptance speech that his daughters, Sasha, 7, and 10-year-old Malia, would get a dog when they moved to the White House.

Since his announcement, in the early hours of Nov 5, the selection of the first pet has been eagerly awaited not only by the children but also by the nation's dog lovers.

The target date for the arrival of the family pet is after the girls' spring break trip, in April, Michelle Obama, the First Lady, told People magazine. The Obama girls attend the private Sidwell Friends school, which has spring holidays from March 20-29 and a day off for students on April 13.

The family would like to find a rescue Portuguese Water Dog, Mrs Obama said.

"Temperamentally they're supposed to be pretty good," she said. "From the size perspective, they're sort of middle of the road - it's not small, but it's not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that's where we're leaning."

The breed is also good for those who have allergies, like Malia.

I think the Portuguese Water Dog is a cutie, but I also own a poodle which has a similar curly coat. Barack didn't offer up much to Leno on his show about the specific arrival date so I'm starting to feel like Sasha and Malia awaiting this surprise arrival.
